A few of our favorite dutch oven meals to prepare on your next outing

If you’ve been lucky enough to enjoy a dutch oven meal around a campfire, then you know how amazing it is to have this luxury. While dutch oven cooking is a labor love, the final result is a mouthwatering meal best enjoyed in the outdoors. Ideal for breakfast, dinner or dessert, here are four easy recipes to try on your next camping trip.

BISCUITS & GRAVY

1 can (16oz) biscuit dough
1 tbs oil
1 lb pork sausage, crumbled
1/4 cup flour
2 1/2 cups milk
1 tsp pepper
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp thyme

Directions

  1. Use 1tbs oil to grease dutch oven and prepare coals 
  2. Set biscuits in dutch oven; arrange so that they are barely touching
  3. Bake biscuits for 10 minutes, checking often and adjusting time as needed
  4. In a separate pan, cook sausage over medium heat; stir in flour until evenly coated
  5. Gradually add in milk and stir until gravy forms; add salt, pepper, onion powder and thyme
    Pro Tip: Make gravy ahead of time, refrigerate and then heat at camp
  6. Top biscuits with gravy and serve

Beer bread is a great side dish for dinner.
BEER BREAD

3 cups self rising flour
3 tbs sugar
4 tbs melted butter, divided
1 tbs dried, minced onion
1 1/2 cups light beer cup brown sugar
1/2 cup shredded cheese (optional)

Directions

  1. Lightly grease dutch oven and prepare coals 
  2. In a separate bowl, combine flour, sugar, minced onion and 3 tbs of melted butter
    Pro Tip: mix dry ingredients together ahead of trip
  3. Slowly add beer and stir until smooth
  4. Once dutch oven is heated, spoon in batter and top with 1 tbs of melted butter
  5. Bake for 45-50 minutes; insert a toothpick in the top to check if done (toothpick should have a few crumbs sticking to it)
  6. Once done, remove from heat and add shredded cheese to top, if desired; covered and let melt
BEEF STEW

1 tbs oil
2 lbs beef stew meat
6 small potatoes, cubed
3 large carrots, diced
1 onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 cans (10 oz each) condensed beef broth
Salt and pepper
water, as needed

Directions

  1. Lightly grease dutch oven and prepare coals  
  2. While dutch oven is heating, prepare potatoes, carrots, onion and garlic
  3. Once the dutch oven is ready, brown stew meat for 10-15 minutes; add flour and coat beef chunks
  4. Slowly add in beef broth and stir; add enough water to cover beef chunks with 1-inch of liquid
  5. Let cook for an hour, until beef chunks are tender; add in vegetables, stir and cook for another 20 minutes
  6. Add salt and pepper to taste, cool and serve.
PINEAPPLE UPSIDE DOWN CAKE

2 boxes yellow cake mix
2 cups water
6 eggs
2 sticks butter (softened)
1 cup vegetable oil
1 cup brown sugar
1 can sliced pineapple
12 cherries (optional)

Directions

  1. Prepare and heat dutch oven
  2. In a separate bowl, combine cake mix, water, eggs, vegetable oil and 1 stick of butter; set aside
    Pro Tip: replace water with the pineapple juice from the canned pineapple
  3. Once dutch oven is heated, add the other stick of butter and brown sugar; stir until caramelized
  4. Lay the sliced pineapple on the bottom of the dutch oven in the caramelized brown sugar; if using cherries, place in the center of the pineapple slices
  5. Pour the cake mix on top, cover and bake
