So, you fell in love with ice climbing. Now you need all the help you can get just to hang on to your ice climbing tools. Ice climbing coach Marcus Garcia shares one of his favorite ice and mixed climbing tips that will help you keep climbing before you take the fall. It’s what he calls the grip and relax.
“With mixed climbing, its learning how to be relaxed on the tool,” says Garcia, who coaches national and international mixed climbing athletes from his gym, The Rock Lounge, in Durango Colorado
According to Garcia, most ice and mixed climbers tend to over grip their tools, quickly quickly through the strength and stamina of their hands and forearms.
“If you grip, then open hand and relax, now your muscles reset, and now they have a new energy flushed into it.”
